When you first brought your dog home, you were probably having visions of Lassie, but there have probably been days that you were remembering Cujo more. However, there’s still hope! A bit of training goes a long way in reducing bad dog behavior.
To ensure success, you must ensure that the crate you are using is appropriate for the size and breed of your pet. Keep in mind that your puppy will eventually grow into a bigger dog. Be sure to select a crate that allows your dog to have ample room as it grows. There should be ample room for the dog to lie down and turn comfortably.
“Leave It!” should be one of the first commands that a puppy learns. This command instructs them to release an object and walk away. This command is a great way to avoid damaging furniture or eating dangerous things.
Try to teach your dog good habits right away. It is easier to instill good habits than it is to deal with bad ones. If you do not want the dog to beg for table scraps, then never give it any food from the table to start with.
Be patient when you are training your puppy, there is no doubt that accidents are going to happen. To help your training stay on track, clean up any messes right away. Animals are inclined to eliminate repeatedly in spots where they can smell urine or feces, and carpets require special care. Many products are sold that will neutralize these odors, so ask about them at your local pet store.
Leave the leash somewhat loose during training. When they’re on a walk, they are anxious to check things out. This makes them excited and want to pull on the leash. If you know what you are doing then you will train them to walk on a leash with slack.
By being consistent you can teach your puppy to “hold it.” When you start housebreaking a puppy, you will want to take it outside as often as possible. When he goes potty outside, tell him he did good. Never react harshly to your dog going potty inside. He doesn’t know any better and yelling at him will not help him learn. Instead, give the pet every chance to succeed by taking it outside as soon as you remove it from the crate and roughly 15 minutes after it eats or drinks.
Most people are surprised how quickly their dog can learn from training and how fast they get results. Try some of the tips above if you feel a strain on the relationship between you and your dog.
