Learn Consistent Puppy Training Skills to Maximize Your Results

When you choose a dog from an animal rescue, its behavior may be quite a bit more subdued at the shelter than it will be once it settles into your home. Luckily, it just takes some elementary puppy training to help your dog understand what sort of behavior is expected.

By giving your dog the proper amount of rewards, you’ll have an easier time training. Knowing when to give him a treat, and how much, is paramount. Your dog does not know why they are getting the reward unless you do it right after the positive behavior.

Make sure that there is a calm environment in the room where your dog is. Your dog should have the patience to wait for you to get settled and signal that you are ready to play with him. When you enter the room, ignore excessive agitation on your dog’s part. By ignoring the behavior, you will extinguish it.

Make sure your teething puppy has a bunch of chew toys readily available to him, and keep other things he likes to chew on away from him. Instead of allowing it to continue chewing on your important furniture or toys, provide a well-loved chew toy. Try a frozen washcloth to alleviate the pain of teething for your puppy.

Continue training your dog so he doesn’t forget how to learn. A lot of owners will train their dogs once and not conduct any refreshers. Like their human owners, pets truly are creatures of habit. This shows that you need to do periodic refreshers so that your dog continues to follow the rules.

You will be able to allow your dog to do more as it learns. This balance between obedience and freedom will provide your dog with a very satisfying life. Be sure not to give them too much since this can counteract training efforts.

Anytime your dog does something good, make sure you reward him. They need to know that the behavior they have done is exactly what you wanted them to do. This is the best way to ensure that the dog understands the difference between right and wrong.

Be patient when training a dog. A patient attitude will make the training process less stressful for the both of you. Remember that your dog really does want to please you, but sometimes he gets confused because he speaks a different language and cannot understand what you are asking.

Many dog owners are surprised to find that canine training is a much easier and faster process than they had expected. So if you are looking to change any of your dog’s wayward ways, try some of our tips for quick success!
